~ FIRST FALL FRIDAY~

Fall has arrived!  This was a great example to work with as we introduced change into the classroom.  The leadership focus of the week was NO PUT DOWNS.  We were able to discuss this topic as a class to work towards building our character.  The students were working hard on spotting a Good Friend in the room and looking for traits on friendship.

LANGUAGE ARTS:

1st Grade:  My first graders started the week out with a get-to-know you activity and they presented their All About Me project to the group.  On Tuesday, we started learning about Connections.  As a class, we read the Graphic Alphabet by David Pelletier.  The kids did a great job figuring out the letters in the book and they were able to figure out most of the pictures too!  They also played a matching game to learn further about connections and how things are linked together.  The kids really enjoyed this activity!
REMINDER:  Please make sure they are working on their patches and descriptions at home and have them ready to return for Monday, September 26th.

2nd Grade:  The second graders also worked with connections this week.  We started out with a brief reminder about connections from last year.  Then they worked with a partner to take a group of connections and put them into categories.  I was proud of how well this group cooperated with their partners.  Then they had an opportunity to share their ideas with the class.  It was interesting to see the different categories the groups came up with for their project.  They made some great connections!

3rd Grade:  We started the week off with a quick get-to-know you activity. Our lesson started us out with trying to define change – this was a struggle at first.  We then worked on a brainstorming activity of things that change.  We talked about our list and then took it further by placing them into categories.  After having a better understanding of change, we turned it around and came up with a list of things that do not change.  This was a challenge for the group, but we came up with some great ideas together!  After our project we looked back at our definition of change, at this time we were able to make our definition grow as we had a better understanding of the meaning of the word.

4th Grade:  They had a lesson this week on change.  It was great to see what the children still remembered from last year.  They broke off into two groups and made a list on things that change.  Next, they placed their ideas into categories, as they worked through this step the list on change grew quickly for both groups.  The groups shared their ideas with the class and explained how their examples fit into their categories.  Then they had to come up with a list of examples of things that do not change.  This also became a challenge for both groups.  As a team, we were able to work together to come up with this list!
Thank you parents for helping the students with their interviews at home!  They were all returned and we will use these next week to help us discover more about change.

MATH:
1st – 4th Grade:  This week all the classes worked on a math "preview packet."  This came from our math program we are using this year and simply allows us to see what they know about some of the topics we will be exploring this year.  The students were encouraged to attempt every question, but were okay to move-on if they did not understand it.  We will use this as a guide to help in assigning groups throughout the year.   At the end of the year, they will retake the packet again and we will see how much they grew!  I will hold onto the tests for now and send them home with the post-test after we are finished!

My 1st and 2nd graders worked through the packet one problem at a time with me reading the questions to the students.  They were allowed to work ahead if they didn’t need my instructions. The first graders took a 5 minute brain break after working each day to get the wriggles out after working through the packets.

My 3rd and 4th graders went over the packet briefly and then they completed it independently.  The students were encouraged to try the problem even if they were unsure of it.  All of my groups gave it their best effort to work through the material.  Both grades finished early on Thursday and this allowed us to start a quick preview of our math program.

3rd Grade Math:  They were given a note this week explaining of a project to work on at home – The Yeti Hunt for Capacity.  The note also asks to send in the bottles the children use for the project, as we will use them further in class this year.  Thank you in advance for helping us with collecting the bottles.
