2ND GRADE:  THE MIRACULOUS JOURNEY OF EDWARD TULANE:
This week we took some time to practice our new parts of speech - verb and adverb.  The students completed a worksheet underlining the verb and circling the adverb.  Then we revisited our Edward Tracker to add our new events from the story.  We had a new twist where Edward is now referred to as Susanna with his new family.  We are also seeing Edward struggle with understanding different emotions he is now feeling.
To end the week, we started an exercise on point of view.  We had to look at a situation that took place and examine several different character points of view with that event.  This activity allowed us to think about each characters feelings or opinions about different events that have occurred.  This was a new idea for some of them and we will continue to work with it next week.
Students need to read Chapters 11 and 12 for this week.

3RD GRADE:  BEATRIX POTTER:
This week we continued with our study on Beatrix Potter.  First, the students saw a reading analyzer completed from The Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle.  We looked at each section and what is expected of them when they complete it because it was their first time seeing it.  Then, the students used the remainder of their time to read and add on two more stories to our tracker.  This week we looked at The Tale of Benjamin Bunny and The Tale of Mrs. Tittlemouse.
We will continue with this lesson next week.

4TH GRADE:  FAMILY SYSTEMS:
This week we went backwards and repeated the lesson for my friends that were at Camp Goodfellow two weeks ago.  It worked out perfect because this week the other group was at Camp Goodfellow.  We watched a short clip on What is a Family to a group of children from Australia.  Then, the students were asked to write a paragraph defining their family in a similar way.  They were reminded to utilize ARMS and CUPS for revising and editing their paragraph.
We will finish the lesson next week when the whole group is back together.

Due to the E-Learning day on Wednesday, October 17th, my math groups only met one day this week.

2ND GRADE:  CRASH TEST:
The time has arrived for the students to design their own car seat. This week the students were given the rules to the crash test.    They saw some old test runs from previous years to see what the crash test will look like.  Then, we went over the materials and requirements they must meet with the different supplies.  The big catch will be throughout the process is to make sure they don't go over the amount of materials they are allowed to utilize.  The magic number for the next few weeks will be 50 centimeters.  Although the students are given lots of materials they must make sure to measure and record what they are using and cannot go over a total of 50 centimeters of supplies.  At the end of the design process, we will conduct our own crash test with real eggs!  Assuming we have no technical issues, I will share videos of their crash tests.

3RD GRADE:  CREATING A YETI:
We are putting the finishing touches on the Yeti.  This week they completed the feet.  It took some debating and trial and error on their part making sure the measurements were correct.
Next week we will finish our lesson with doubling.

4TH GRADE:  IMPROPER FRACTIONS:
They are still working away at judging the frog jumping contest.  This week they did a much better job at remembering the strip is divided into 3 wholes.
Next week, we will look at the data and go over all of the results the children recorded.

~ MARVELOUS MONDAY ~

Around the School
October 12th - End of 1st Grading Period
October 15th-16th - Camp Goodfellow
(4th Grade -1 Socausky)
October 17th - E-Learning Day
October 24th-25th - Elementary Parent Teacher Conferences
October 26th - Fall Recess

2ND GRADE:  THE MIRACULOUS JOURNEY OF EDWARD TULANE:
We started the week with a great discussion on their reading.  We added the information into our Edward Tracker.  Then, they completed a worksheet where they placed events from the story in the correct sequential order.  To end the week, we took some time to review a verb and introduce adverbs.

We will continue on our journey with Edward next week.
Students were asked to read chapters 8-10.  STOP at chapter 11.

3RD GRADE:  BEATRIX POTTER:

We started the week with a journal entry.  The students were asked to draw a picture of a pet they have at home and write 1 paragraph of how they interact with their pet.

Next, we moved onto discovering about our new author we will study from - Beatrix Potter.  We read over and looked at some pictures from a short biography on her life.  We had just enough time left to read The Tale of Mrs. Tiggy Winkle.

We will continue studying the interactions of Beatrix Potter next week.

4TH GRADE:  FAMILY SYSTEM - LITTLE WOMEN:
This week we reviewed story elements.  The students were asked to track interesting story elements throughout the year in their writer's notebooks.  To help with this task, we added these items into their reading analyzer.  I shared with the students the new reading analyzer they will use throughout the remainder of the year with the new items incorporated into it.

Next, we looked at a chart that was created to help them track the family systems with our generalizations.  We added Thunder Cake to the chart to model how they will record these throughout our study of family systems.

To end the week, the students were asked to read chapter 1 from the classic Little Women by Louisa May Alcott.
After reading this chapter, they were asked to complete the new reading analyzer.

We will continue with this lesson next week.
The students were asked to complete the reading analyzer independently for homework.  We are at another pause, while some students go on the 4th grade camping trip.  Waiting two weeks to complete it would probably mean some friends would forget about what they read.  They do not need to turn this in for another 2 weeks when all are back in class.

2ND GRADE:  CIRCUMFERENCE:

First, we reviewed the steps to measuring our eggs with the width of the large egg.  Then, it was time for them to complete this project independently with a small egg.

Next, it was time to share our results and complete a chart that will review each tool we used to measure.  Last week the students already concluded that the tape measure was our best tool.  However, this chart let us discuss why so many of our answers were different from the other students.

These difference  allowed us to discuss the positives and negatives to each tool.  Each student should have had the same answer when measuring with the tape measure.  We had some discrepancies with this category too.  This led us into a discussion on things to remember when measuring: start and stop and the same point, make sure the tape measure is not moving and make sure the tape measure is pulled all the way.

We had just enough time to answer our Think Deeply question to Dru and Teller.  They asked the students to tell them the best tool for measuring circumference and explain why they chose that tool.  Since they already knew the tape measure was the best tool to measure circumference, we focused on the explanation being a complete answer.  It was great seeing all the students list both reasons  in their response to Dru and Teller.

We will start a new lesson next week.

3RD GRADE:  CREATING THE YETI:

This week the students took the data they collected from last week and used it to create the yeti.  They had to carefully measure out the legs, arm, torso, feet and head.  The hands are being saved for a wrap-up to the lesson next week.

Enjoy some extra pictures this week from their project.

4TH GRADE:  FROLICKING FROGS:  We continued to judge the frog jumping contest this week.  The students started a worksheet where they had to use adding machine tape measured to 3 feet to show where each frog jumped.  Although the tape is 3 feet long, the students must remember that 1 whole is equal to 1 foot.  The students showing the jumps on the tape allowed them to visually compare the jumps they were measuring.
The students are working towards having an understanding of improper fractions to mixed numbers.  The fractions on the tape are first marked as improper fractions.  Then they may try and rename it as a mixed number.  We also looked at the mathematical way to switch in between these two numbers.
We will continue with this lesson next week.

Have a Great Week,
