~ Fantastic Friday ~

Weekly Quote

What a great week!  All of my groups had a busy week as we are actually diving into the lessons for both language arts and math.  I have been very impressed with how well all of my classes are coming in and ready to work!  This was our final week on spotting friendship in the room as we build our character.  Next month will be a new focus and we will have our first Character of the Month posted in next week’s blog!

LANGUAGE ARTS

1st Grade:  This week we finished our lesson on Concept of Connections.  On Monday we started out by talking about things that don’t fit together and are not connected.  As a class, we came up with a long list and the kids ideas just kept coming to make our list grow!  We then looked at pictures of symbols that are universal to all languages and talked about what each image symbolized to us.  The children learned that people have used signs and symbols for thousands of years as a way of communication.  We ended the day with a hunt for connections in the classroom.  They had a lot of fun with this project and I was impressed with the different connections each child found!  You can continue this lesson with them at home by asking them to find connections around the house -it is amazing to see what connections they see!
On Tuesday the children assembled their coat of arms project.  They have their shields assembled and notes ready for their presentation.  They even enjoyed some extra time to add a few decorations onto their shields.  Next week we will review the rubric and rehearse before they present to the class.  I cannot wait to see their presentations!

2nd Grade:  This week the students started reading the poem Eldorado.   As we read through the poem together we were learning how to use a reading analyzer.  This is a paper the students will use throughout the year to organize their thoughts with our reading material and it will help them to have a better understanding for what they are reading.  We also practiced using a Venn diagram to help us compare and contrast the knight from Eldorado with a picture of a knight.  The students did well with this project and were familiar with the Venn diagram.
Next week we will conclude our lesson on Eldorado and I will have the children practice using the reading analyzer one more time to make sure they understand this sheet.  It is something they will see a lot and I want to make sure they have a firm understanding of how to use it as a guide.

3rd Grade:  Look to the Stars – The Genre of Myth:   We are studying myths this week and working towards a class definition of a myth.  We started the week out with one of my favorite quotes “Aim for the stars; if you fall short, you will land on the moon.” by an unknown author – the students were asked to write an interpretation to the quote in their journals.  We then worked on imagery.  I read a brief description and then asked them to share what they saw.  This was a brief introduction into our unit on myths.   On Monday, we worked together on reading a myth and then retelling a story.  Tuesday we read another myth and practiced our retell with a partner using the rubric.
Next week we will further our study into myths, as we read a myth and present the retell as a presentation.  The more we retell the stories the better we will be able to come up with a definition of a myth!

4th Grade:  The students started the week out with a lesson on writing using the hamburger method.  They then used the interviews they completed at home to practice writing a multiple paragraphs to present to the class.  They worked on this assignment in class on both days.  This was a great start for me to see where the students are at with their writing.  Writing on the interviews was good practice for the students because they will eventually complete a writing assignment on a biography.
On Tuesday, they were invited to share their stories they wrote with the class.  Helping the children become confident in presenting in front of the class in another skill the children will work on throughout the year.  I hope to see their confidence grow as we work on this technique.

MATH

1st Grade:  This week our class received a special package all the way from South America!  We met two new friends Imi and Zani.  They have asked for our help this year and we are up for the challenge!  Imi and Zani are setting up a Measuring Fair and we will be helping them throughout the year.  In our package we received a few guidelines they ask us to follow as we help them.  We learned about being a good speaker and listener.  We then modeled and practiced some of these new skills.  They also sent us a scrapbook that we looked through and identified the speaker and listener roles.  At the end of the day, we looked at some pictures of a macaw and a toucan to compare them with our new friends.  The children were able to identify Zani as a toucan from the pictures he sent us, but we needed some help in finding out that our new friend Imi is a macaw. We also looked at a map to see how far away our new friends were from us.

On Thursday, we began to help our friends with their first question on shipping a box of supplies to us.  We looked at a book in the classroom and the students described it to me.  As the lesson went on I introduced the word “attribute” to them.   We then looked at our list and identified the math attributes verse not math attributes.  After we understood our new word, we looked at a box and found ways to teach our friends how to measure a box.  Our friends took it further and came up with a list of tools they could use in the rainforest in case they didn’t the supplies we had.  They decided they could use a vine to for a ruler, branches and a rock for a scale, and leaves for paper.  It was great hearing them take our learning further!  We will continue with this lesson next week, but are off to a great start!

2nd Grade:  This week our class received a special package all the way from Botswana, Africa! We met a pair of meerkats that call themselves the “Detective Duo.”  Dru and Teller have asked for our classrooms help and we are up for the challenge!  They sent us a welcome package and are teaching us how to be a good listener and speaker.  We also looked at a scrapbook they sent us to see models of the expectations we will practice in the class.  We had an opportunity this week to practice the speaker and listener roles so we know what will be expected throughout the year.
On Thursday, we practiced our speaker and listener roles as we investigated a question for Dru and Teller.  We were measuring a tunnel for our friends to help them decide if the meerkats could travel through it.  Dru and Teller had different measurements for the tunnel and our class had to help them decide who was measuring correctly.  We will finish up our lesson next week so we can send them a letter with our findings!

3rd Grade:  On Wednesday, the class reviewed a few procedures we will be using with our new math material.  We learned about being a good speaker and listener.  We talked about the rights and obligations the students will practice in the room.  Then we talked about what a mathematician does and ways we will work as one.  Lastly, we talked discussed defending our answers in our writing, which is something new this year we will be incorporating.  We will practice this together so the students can learn to master this skill independently!

On Thursday, we began with our first lesson – Measuring Me.  As a quick reminder to the lesson, we started with a review unit on using a ruler - focusing on the centimeters.  From there the students, started out with a practice exercise on “Measuring in Our Classroom.”  We will continue with this lesson next week, but are off to a great start!  Thank you for helping our classroom in collecting the containers we need – we have a nice collection started.   A few students still need to turn in the Hunt for Capacity worksheet – please send in as it is completed.  Thanks!

4th Grade:  On Wednesday, the group reviewed a few procedures we will use with our new math program.  We discussed proper speaking and listening roles.  The students learned about their rights and obligations they will practice in the classroom.  We then defined what makes a mathematician.  Lastly, we discussed the ability to defend our answers in our writing.  This is something new to the students this year that we will work on together in the beginning so they can learn to master this skill independently!
On Thursday, we had a mini-lesson on shapes.  To start the class we had a brief discussion on shapes and their geometric name.  The students were able to look at mini-models as we discussed each shape.  Impressively they were able to identify almost all of them!  This was an introduction into “The Hunt for Shapes in My World.”  The students searched for shapes in our classroom for about 10 minutes.  Then the fun began and they were allowed to explore the school in search for shapes to complete the assignment.

~ FIRST FALL FRIDAY~

Fall has arrived!  This was a great example to work with as we introduced change into the classroom.  The leadership focus of the week was NO PUT DOWNS.  We were able to discuss this topic as a class to work towards building our character.  The students were working hard on spotting a Good Friend in the room and looking for traits on friendship.

LANGUAGE ARTS:

1st Grade:  My first graders started the week out with a get-to-know you activity and they presented their All About Me project to the group.  On Tuesday, we started learning about Connections.  As a class, we read the Graphic Alphabet by David Pelletier.  The kids did a great job figuring out the letters in the book and they were able to figure out most of the pictures too!  They also played a matching game to learn further about connections and how things are linked together.  The kids really enjoyed this activity!
REMINDER:  Please make sure they are working on their patches and descriptions at home and have them ready to return for Monday, September 26th.

2nd Grade:  The second graders also worked with connections this week.  We started out with a brief reminder about connections from last year.  Then they worked with a partner to take a group of connections and put them into categories.  I was proud of how well this group cooperated with their partners.  Then they had an opportunity to share their ideas with the class.  It was interesting to see the different categories the groups came up with for their project.  They made some great connections!

3rd Grade:  We started the week off with a quick get-to-know you activity. Our lesson started us out with trying to define change – this was a struggle at first.  We then worked on a brainstorming activity of things that change.  We talked about our list and then took it further by placing them into categories.  After having a better understanding of change, we turned it around and came up with a list of things that do not change.  This was a challenge for the group, but we came up with some great ideas together!  After our project we looked back at our definition of change, at this time we were able to make our definition grow as we had a better understanding of the meaning of the word.

4th Grade:  They had a lesson this week on change.  It was great to see what the children still remembered from last year.  They broke off into two groups and made a list on things that change.  Next, they placed their ideas into categories, as they worked through this step the list on change grew quickly for both groups.  The groups shared their ideas with the class and explained how their examples fit into their categories.  Then they had to come up with a list of examples of things that do not change.  This also became a challenge for both groups.  As a team, we were able to work together to come up with this list!
Thank you parents for helping the students with their interviews at home!  They were all returned and we will use these next week to help us discover more about change.

MATH:
1st – 4th Grade:  This week all the classes worked on a math "preview packet."  This came from our math program we are using this year and simply allows us to see what they know about some of the topics we will be exploring this year.  The students were encouraged to attempt every question, but were okay to move-on if they did not understand it.  We will use this as a guide to help in assigning groups throughout the year.   At the end of the year, they will retake the packet again and we will see how much they grew!  I will hold onto the tests for now and send them home with the post-test after we are finished!

My 1st and 2nd graders worked through the packet one problem at a time with me reading the questions to the students.  They were allowed to work ahead if they didn’t need my instructions. The first graders took a 5 minute brain break after working each day to get the wriggles out after working through the packets.

My 3rd and 4th graders went over the packet briefly and then they completed it independently.  The students were encouraged to try the problem even if they were unsure of it.  All of my groups gave it their best effort to work through the material.  Both grades finished early on Thursday and this allowed us to start a quick preview of our math program.

3rd Grade Math:  They were given a note this week explaining of a project to work on at home – The Yeti Hunt for Capacity.  The note also asks to send in the bottles the children use for the project, as we will use them further in class this year.  Thank you in advance for helping us with collecting the bottles.

CHARACTER OF THE MONTH

WEEKLY QUOTE:  This week I am allowing you to see the answer at home to help with some hints!  The students struggled with the first one and hoping this will help!

~ FIRST CLASS FRIDAY ~

There was so much excitement this week in HA!  I was excited to get to meet all my new students and learn a little about each of them.   Seeing the excitement in their eyes as I picked up my groups for HA was a great start to the week!  The kids were eager to get started with their groups.  Both classes this week started off with learning about classroom expectations and an exciting theme we will be building on throughout the year.  Below you can read about how our classroom is building character throughout this school year.

Our Class is Building Character…
   1.  Each week a different quote from a Disney movie will be displayed in the room.  It will focus on a character trait that we are looking for in the room that month.  The students will have a chance to guess the movie the quote came from and the character who said it.  This will allow them to earn prizes throughout the year.

   2.   The children will also have an opportunity to SPOT Great Character in the room.  If they spot a student displaying character they will fill out a slip marking the traits that student displayed for the day.  I have asked them to also include what the student did to show the trait.

3.The traits a student displays will have a chance to have them be selected into the Character of the Month Club.  Each month this will change to a different theme we are building with our Character.

   4.   On Fridays I will display the next week’s quote on the blog as a preview so the students may think about it and have their answers prepared for the week.  You may sit down and discuss the quote and give them a hint, but please remember it is a challenge for them – so don’t give them the answers.

   5.   The blog will also allow you to see the next month’s Character of the Month. At the end of the month the students who displayed Good Character will be featured in the Character of the Month club!

I am hoping that this will become a fun way to talk to the students about character traits.    I also hope it makes them work on displaying all of their leadership skills daily, as I will be looking for different ones each month.

LANGUAGE ARTS & MATH:  My language art groups met with me on Monday and Tuesday and my math groups came to see me on Wednesday and Thursday.  On the first day for both groups we went over classroom expectations and the students learned some fun facts about me.   The second day they came to me we learned all about the students with some get-to-know you activities.  I learned lots about the students this week and can’t wait to learn more about them as the year continues!
My first grade language arts group only met on Monday because of early dismissal, so they will start next week off with a get-to-know you activity so I can learn all about them too!

LANGUAGE ARTS:  My groups will be starting regular lessons next week.  My first and second graders will be learning all about connections.  My third and fourth graders will be learning all about change.  These are the two themes you will see throughout the year as we work through the materials.

4th Grade Language Arts:  A reminder to all parents, they should have come home with a folder and worksheet to complete at home.  I went over the sheet with the students and explained they should interview an adult.  They only need to complete the interview – we will complete the rest in class on Tuesday.  Please have your child return this paper on September 19th.

1st Grade Language Arts:  They will come home with their folders on Monday with a packet on Coat of Arms.  There will be a letter explaining what to complete at home with the students.  This will allow them to have plenty of time to complete the badges and help keep them a secret from the group, until they present them to the class.  Please follow the instructions on the letter and we will assemble the project in class.  Please be on the lookout for this packet from you child.   Please return this packet on September 26th.

MATH:  I shared a little information with the math groups about the new program we will be using this year.  Each group will be working with measurement with their grade level.  I am very excited for the kids to work with this new program!  It looks like they will have a lot of hands on learning as we are exploring new concepts.

WEEKLY QUOTE: "You and I are a Team.  Nothing is more important than our FRIENDSHIP ."
This week the kids can submit two answers:
The children may submit an answer with the movie the quote came from and a bonus for the week if they can name the character who said it.  Let the guessing begin!
Spotting Good Character

Around the School:
This week the school kicked off One Book One School with an assembly on Tuesday.  The school had a visitor join us at the assembly to give them hints about the book for the school year.  They were all thrilled when they met Humphrey and discovered the book for the year…

~ FIRST FRIDAY ~

WELCOME BACK!
First Friday:  Hello!  Welcome to our High Ability (HA) blog! This is our weekly blog that will allow you to peek inside our classroom to see what exciting things the children our learning throughout the year.  A weekly email will be sent when the blog is ready to view for the week.  My goal will be to have it ready for you every Friday. You will be able to access the blog from a link at the bottom of the email or from Yost’s homepage under classrooms.

Our weekly schedule will be Mondays and Tuesdays Language Arts (LA) and Wednesdays and Thursdays Math.  If your child qualified for both, I will see them all four days!  On Fridays, I'll meet with the other HA Instructors to share lesson plans for the upcoming week which means no classes on that day.

High ability will meet twice a week during flex time for a half an hour each day.  Flex time is a time set aside at Yost per grade level for students to receive more intensified instruction.  Your child's teacher and I will keep an open line of communication to make sure their needs are being met in both locations.
I have been training with the other HA instructors at liberty for the past few weeks.  I am very excited to meeting the students on Monday and Wednesday and getting started with our classes!

                                             Looking forward to an...
                                              INCREDIBLE YEAR

Get to Know Me: I was born and raised in Michigan City, Indiana and currently still live in the area.  I am a graduate from Michigan City High School.  I originally attended Ivy Tech Community College for Hospitality Management.  During that time, I participated in the Walt Disney College Program.  This was an amazing experience where I learned many skills I utilize still to this day.  I have completed two years of Early Childhood Education and will be continuing my course work online this year.

My drive to want to pursue my education comes from working in the school systems since 2011.  I started off working with MCAS as a guest teacher in spring of 2011.  I was offered an instructional assistant position in the fall of 2011.  As an instructional assistant I worked with K-6 students instructing small reading groups.  This will be my first year joining Duneland School Corporation and the HA team.  I am looking forward to a new challenge this year and meeting all my new students.

I am a mom to two wonderful children!  I have a daughter in 7th grade and son in 2nd grade.  My children keep me on my toes and running in many different directions.  My daughter is active in running, swimming and voice.  My son will be starting his second season in swimming.  They joined the Duneland Swim Club last season, so you may see me in my spare time in the bleachers at the pool!  My daughter participates in voice and musicals with Premier Performance also in Chesterton.  I am quickly becoming familiar with the area as we are here 6 days a week!

A secret of mine I will share with you is I love all things DISNEY!  My family and I take a yearly trip to visit the Mouse every summer!  This family time is something I look forward to and treasure every year.  My love for Disney and planning our trips has even opened a new road for me in planning trips for other families.  I just started this adventure this past year and love sharing my love for Disney with other families and help them create these memories with their families.

A hobby of mine I have enjoyed since 2004 is coaching volleyball!  I was an assistant varsity and JV coach in North Judson, Indiana from 2004 to 2008.  I also coached club volleyball since 2004 for Dunes Volleyball Club.  I have coached many different age groups from 12’s to 17’s.  A fun fact about coaching is my teams would travel down to Orlando, Florida every June for Nationals.

In the summer my kids and I love to spend our free time at the beach.  We love grabbing some ice cream and also enjoy a sunset over the lake.  A guilty habit is we love to eat out and enjoy new restaurants or visiting some of our favorites.  In the evenings we love to use our new fire-pit we just built and roast some marshmallows.  These are just some things my family and I enjoy to do together and I am sure you will learn more about me as I always share stories!

Please feel free to email me with any questions or concerns.  Looking forward to a great year!
