2ND GRADE:  THE MIRACULOUS JOURNEY OF EDWARD TULANE:

Together, we read the last few chapters of our book this week.  The students were shocked and excited to see Edward reunite with Abilene at the end of our story.  The students wrote a reflection with their final thoughts from the story.

To end the week, we had some fun with a game of Kahoot that covered the entire journey of Edward.  When we return from break we will work on a few final projects with our novel.

3RD GRADE: COMPARE AND CONTRAST:  This week the students finished their T-chart comparing The Watcher and Me...Jane.  Then, they had to select their favorite story and write a paper persuading the reader that the book they selected was the better choice.  They had to incorporate 3 or more arguments from their T-chart to support their answer.
The students completed their hamburger model with their outline of their paragraph - which was a perfect stopping point before break.  We will complete the final paragraph when they return.  We took a few minutes from class to have some Holiday Fun and completed a snowman glyph together.
4TH GRADE:  CHANGE MAKER:  This week we looked at how people can cause a change in society.  We focused on J.K. Rowling and the change she brought to literature.  Together, we read a short biography on her and focused on the obstacles she overcame in her life and what she contributed to society.  The students were very surprised to discover she was rejected by over 10 publishers before finding someone that agreed to release only 500 copies.  We discussed the change she brought to society with the excitement she brought to literature.  This followed with a franchise she created that all started with the idea of a wizard.
We saw midnight release parties for the books and movies, merchandise and a theme park.  The last thing that surprised the students was that she was a philanthropist.  Although she could have reached a billionaire status she is giving back so much to charities it keeps her under this financial mark.  The students tied together her need to give back based on the obstacles she overcame as a single-mother.  At times, she relied on assistance and now she is giving back to pay it forward.  To end the week, we had some holiday fun!  We focused on the change of words as we played some Holiday games.

2ND GRADE:  AREA:  The students came in and completed measuring around the room.  We took some time to let the different groups share their discoveries with the class.  I mentioned last week we picked some challenging areas where the students were converting lots of quarter fractions.  One group had the challenge of converting 21 1/4 quarter pieces into wholes.  Together, they were able to solve this problem.  To end the week, they had some Holiday Fun with a round of Kahoot.

3RD GRADE:  AREA:  The students came in and continued to find their total area of their 2D body.  As they are looking for the total area in the legs and torso, I reminded them they could make multiple squares with number facts they have mastered.  (Hint-Hint:  Our next lesson will teach us how to break apart the larger squares with the distributive property) We changed gears on Thursday for some Holiday Fun.  The students played some Kahoot games to review perimeter and area.

Happy
Holidays

4TH GRADE:  TANGRAMS:  This week the students were given a challenge to recreate a square with 7 tangram pieces.  Ironically, most of them struggled with one piece - the small square.  After, a few hints all the students in the class successfully completed the challenge.  This allowed me to ask the students if each of these pieces represented 1/7 of the whole.
There was no tricking them - this is not true because they were not equal parts of the whole.  We looked at each piece to figure out what part of the fraction they would represent and found pieces that were 1/4, 1/8, and 1/16.  This led us to a perfect stopping point before break.  We ended the week with a few rounds of Kahoot to review equivalent fractions, mixed numbers, and improper fractions.

Have a Wonderful Break,
Ms. Losinski

All Language Arts groups only met on Monday because I was out of the building on Tuesday.

2nd Grade:  The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane:
This week we continued with our Edward Tracker.  The students were excited to discuss their homework from the week because this chapter explained the illustration on the front cover.  It was Edward's dream he was having when all things went black after his head broke.

We also saw Bryce make the ultimate sacrifice for a loved one by giving Edward away so he could be mended.  He had to break his connection with Edward by choice to heal Edward.  We see him put the needs of someone else over his own feelings for the good of the other person.  At this point in the story it is important to pause for a moment and recap how much time has passed.  I have heard some students say Abilene may be in her 20's and some even said she may be married with a child of her own.
When we come in next week we will end the story with a read aloud.

3rd Grade:  Jane Goodall:
This week we started a new lesson.  It asked us to compare and contrast two different biographies on Jane Goodall.  These biographies are presented as short stories and not a chapter book.  We discussed the difference between a Venn Diagram and a T-Chart for comparing and contrasting topics.
This lesson asked us to utilize a T-Chart as we analyze the two stories.  The two stories we were asked to compare were The Watcher: Jane Goodall's Life with the Chimps by Jeanette Winter and Me...Jane by Patrick McDonnell.  First, they wrote down their thoughts to the title and cover.  To end the week, we had just enough time to read the two stories.
We will continue with this lesson next week.

4th Grade:  A Change in Language:
This week the students were challenged to create some new words with their lists of prefixes, root words and suffixes.  Then, we discussed the different ways our language changes today.  We used their musical performance as a reference to popular words in different decades.  This led us into different inventions and discoveries people make and create a name for them.  The last thing we looked at is as technology changes are language grows with new words.  We wrapped up the lesson on language by watching a clip from the book Frindle by Andrew Clements.  This was just a silly reminder for them of how names are created and can be changed as they become popular or trending!  We will move onto a new lesson next week.

Due to the eLearning day on Wednesday, my math groups only met one day this week.

2nd Grade:  Area:
This week we explored the idea of halves, thirds and quarters further.  Halves were brought up briefly at the end of class last week by a student.  We took the time to look at each of these measurements in more detail.  We discussed how many of each piece we would need to make a whole and the students saw samples of each of these measurements.  Then, they were introduced to their next activity - Measuring Around the Room.

Together we measured the teacher's desk and a student's table.  We needed to utilize the half measurement for the teacher's desk.  They successfully converted 5 halves to 2 1/2 square feet.  Then, it was onto measuring the room.  While, they measured the different areas they utilized the different parts when they noticed one whole would be too much.  One group quickly discovered they had a portion that equaled 3 quarters with 9 quarters in all.  It was great hearing them work out the measurements and figure out they had 2 and 1/4 square feet in quarters alone.  We will continue working with area around the room next week.

3rd Grade:  Area:
This group continued on their journey of figuring out the area of their irregular shapes.  They ran into some challenges as they were figuring out the area of some of the larger portions.  One student had a rectangle of 9x18.  This was a challenge, but when asked if we could break that apart into a smaller rectangle - they quickly solved it when making two rectangles that measured 9x9.

They were also discovering that one half of their shape was close to 300 square inches.  This discovery led to comments about how far off the original predictions were of their original shape.  This was completely okay because their first one was more of a guess.  We took a moment to discuss this further with what they know now and decided 600 square inches is a better estimate with the information they know now.
They will continue looking for the area next week.

4th Grade:  Think Deeply:
This week we wrapped up our Think Deeply.  All the students have already solved the order of the bags.  They continued explaining their thoughts on the two different methods they chose to order the bags.

If the students finished early, they were asked to solve the second Think Deeply.  It asked them to compare two fractions using common denominators.  This is not a favorite strategy for most of the students.  However, it is such an important concept for them to grasp, especially when we start to add and subtract fractions that I want to encourage them to keep practicing it.  Next week, we will start a new lesson and have a little fun for the holidays!

Have a Great Weekend,
Ms. Losinski

2nd GRADE:  THE MIRACULOUS JOURNEY OF EDWARD TULANE:
This week the students finished looking at their predictions for the final time.  Then, as a class we defined the word miraculous together.  This allowed them to share some of their thoughts from their predictions on miraculous.  Some of the students related the term to being wonderful and magical.  Many of them thought it could be exciting, to which we decided that when something miraculous happens a feeling of excitement may be associated with the person at the time.  To end class this week, we discussed the reading assignment.  We again see Edward have another vision of seeing Pellegrina.  This time he is screaming at her that she got her wish and he has learned to love.  Edward has learned to love, but he is still figuring out how to handle all of the emotions that come with love.  He wants her to help him because he has learned to love, but he is broken.  The kids were left with many questions from their reading this week because their last chapter ended with a CRASH, as Edward's head hit a counter.  They were curious to read on to see what has happened to him.  We should finish reading the novel this week.
This week the students were assigned Chapters 22 and 23.

3rd GRADE:  ANNOTATIONS:  This week we practiced using our annotations with a close reading on a biography of Jane Goodall.  We worked together on a biography to model the proper way to annotate.  We were going line by line to decide is this important information I need to think further on or not.  It is important to remember that each time you mark or highlight something, that you should include a few notes next to it to explain why or what was important to you.  Then, it was time for them to practice this skill independently.  They did a great job finding important information and needed a quick reminder to add the notes in the margin.
They were extremely excited to share a Disney fact with me that David Greybeard, a famous chimpanzee Jane Goodall studied, is carved in the Tree of Life at Disney's Animal Kingdom.  We decided that this would be a perfect opportunity to assign Ms. Losinski some homework - I am going to look through our pictures to see if we have captured a picture of this on our vacations.  To wrap up the lesson, this week the students wrote in their journals.  They had to pick from a set of quotes from Jane Goodall and write about a time it applied to their life.  We will start a new lesson next week.

4th GRADE:  CHANGE IN LANGUAGE:
This week we continued looking at the history of the origin of the English language.  We finished the questions and shared some of our answers.  This sheet allowed them to look at the first people to speak Latin, the beginning languages it spread to and then end with how it became a part of the English language.  It also introduced us to our word parts. The students were already familiar with the terms prefix, root word and suffix. We did add onto the definition of these words by stating that when added they changed the meaning of the words.
Then, we started defining words based on their word parts.  We started with a set of words with Latin word parts and then looked at a set with Greek word parts.  Each time the student divided the word with a line to show the separation of the prefix to root word or root word to suffix.  Then, they created a definition for each of these words based on their word parts.
We will continue looking at the change in language next week.

2nd GRADE:  AREA:  This week we continued exploring area.  We worked with our range from last week of 15 square feet to 25 square feet.  First, we revisited our estimate of 15 square feet and concluded it was a good size, but a student could probably fit into a slightly smaller area of 10 square feet.
Then, we measured out 25 square feet and quickly concluded that this would be too large for one person.  Some of my students were getting confused thinking we were looking for a tent to fit a group of people, but for the moment we are only looking for how much sleeping space a student would take up in a tent.
Next, it was onto measuring actual sleeping bags. The class was split into two groups.  First each group needed to estimate the area of the sleeping bag in square feet.  Then, they took our scrapbook paper and measured out the actual area.  Both groups quickly noticed a problem - they each had gaps!  It was more than 2 feet, but less than 3 feet.  One student quickly worked the problem out and said it looks like we are missing half a sheet of paper.  This introduced to them we can measure with a half sheet to create whole feet.  They each had 6 halves which they determined would equal 3 whole feet.

We will continue to work with area next week.

3rd GRADE:  AREA:
This week the students finished finding the exact area of their fried egg. Then, we moved onto exploring area of a large irregular shape.  The students traced their bodies onto wrapping paper with a 1-inch grid on the reverse side of the roll.  This gave us an irregular  2-dimensional shape to explore with area. The students first recorded an estimate of their shape. Then, we broke the shape down into portions: arms, hands, legs, torso, and head.
Together, I worked with each group modeling with the hand on looking for a square within our irregular shape.  Then, we added in the rest of the whole squares within the shape and recorded this answer.  Next, they looked at and recorded the partial squares and converted them to whole squares.  Finally, they would add their two totals together to get the total area for this section of the irregular shape.  They will continue this process throughout the partitions until they find the total area of their shape.  We will continue working with area next week.

4th GRADE:  THINK DEEPLY:  This week we had a final review on ordering fractions.  The students completed a worksheet with various problems ordering fractions to continue practicing their different strategies.  Then, we moved onto our Think Deeply.  They were asked to place in order from least to greatest a set of 3 fractions.  Then, they had to explain at least 2 of the strategies they used to order the fractions.

We looked at the set of fractions and decided the three strategies that could be used were benchmarks, common numerators or cross-multiplying.  After deciding which two steps they preferred, they needed to explain the process of using that strategy in their own words.  To help them with their writing, I reminded them to write it as if they were the teacher explaining it to someone that knows nothing about the topic.  I also told them to remember to use their keywords when referring to parts of the fraction.  We will wrap up this lesson next week.

Have a Great Weekend,
Ms. Losinski
