AROUND DUNELAND:

Winter Card Contest 2019

The Duneland School Corporation is excited to announce our 3rd annual Winter Card Contest!  All Duneland students in grades K-8 are eligible to participate. Please see the flyer below for contest guidelines. Submissions are due to the student's school art teacher on or before November 26, 2019. Only one entry per student, please. Student winners will be recognized at the mid January school board meeting.

1st Grade:  READING ANALYZER:
This week we completed a worksheet that introduced the idea of changing one letter to a word can give us a completely knew word with a new meaning.  Then, the students decoded the Over-Under Substitution secret message.  Again, we looked at the clues in the message that let us know we were decoding a sentence.
They tried tricking us by replacing finger spaces with dots, but the exclamation point let them know we were still decoding a sentence.  After repeating Over-Under a few times, the students recognized that the alphabet had the first 13 letters over the other 13 letters - the students quickly became excited as they figured out how to solve this message.  Our message for this lesson was:  HIP, HIP HOORAY FOR THE ALPHABET!
Then, we read The Disappearing Alphabet by Richard Wilbur.  This book introduced to the students how important all of the letters of the alphabet are to us by having a different letter disappear on each page.  To help us learn the meaning of the story, we completed a reading analyzer together.  This was the first time the students were introduced to this worksheet.  By the end of completing it, we identified the message from the author was ALL the letters of the alphabet are important!
We will continue with this lesson next week.

2nd Grade:  PERSUASIVE WRITING:
This week the students put their finishing touches on their final drafts.  The final draft was a struggle for some of my students because they wanted to keep revising and changing while writing their final draft.
I reminded them again the only reason we are writing it again was because our draft became our sloppy copy from all of the previous revisions and editing.  The final copy became their finished product without all of the markings.  When they were finished they took time to come together and persuade their classmates to their opinion.
It was great hearing the different details the students came up with to express their opinions.  We were lucky enough to have a few students write on the opposite side to a topic and this led a discussion on if any of them were persuaded to one side or the other.

Next week we will move onto the next part of the lesson.

3rd Grade:  GRAMMAR TIME:
This week the students completed two different grammar activities.  The first activity the students were introduced to our sentence analysis.  This allows us to look at how we compose sentences.  We started out by identifying the complete subject/ predicate and then highlighting the simple subject/predicate.  Then we looked at each word to identify its part of speech.  Our next activity, asked the students to edit a sentence for grammar errors - in one sentence they were looking for 13 mistakes.  One of the errors was the students needed to

4th Grade:  GRAMMAR TIME:

This week we finished working through a set of sentences identifying the parts of speech and subject/predicate.  We looked further at action verbs verse linking verbs.  The students saw proper adjectives which tricked them at first because they thought they were proper nouns.  We discussed having a compound subject.  Lastly, they were introduced to a direct object.
To end the week, the students were introduced to our vocabulary map.  Together the students defined the word biography.  We utilized our last 5 minutes to continue our diagramming fun with some sample sentences - students came to the board and talked us through all of the steps.  They even identified the direct object in the sentence!  It was great seeing them want to diagram more sentences.
We will continue on with our lesson next week.

1st Grade:  WEIGHT:
This week the students explored comparing the weights of three items.  At first, the students were allowed to weigh all the bags with each other.  However, later in the lesson they were introduced to transitivity.  Transitivity allowed us to weigh our 3 bags only twice and make a conclusion of all three bags weight to one another.  It eliminates the need to weigh the bags three times - a time saver!

We will continue exploring weight next week.

2nd Grade:  TRANSFORMATIONS:
The students became transformers this week.  Dru and Teller have asked the students to create tessellations.  However, before we can make them we need to understand the different movements we will use when making our designs.
This week we explored transformations by defining a flip, turn and slide.

We will continue with our exploration of tessellations next week.

3rd Grade:  WHAT'S NEXT?:
We began the week by playing a silent math game to determine what number came next in a pattern.  Then the students had to describe the pattern.

Next they saw a trick our calculator can do when it comes to repeating patterns.  If the correct number is entered on the calculator with the operation of the function, the calculator with continuously display the pattern every time you hit the equal sign.  This introduced them to finding the number the pattern started with and the correct operation to the pattern.
Next, we looked at the activity What's Next? and completed 1 and 2 together.  This continued their exploration with functions further.
They were given a table and with each they must describe the pattern, identify the calculator number, figure out the 15th number to the pattern and explain how to find the 15th number without extending the table.
This is where the students saw that they must look at each table and discover the relationship from the term to the number.  This will give them the function to each table.  For the remainder of class, they completed the rest of this assignment independently.

We will continue with this lesson next week.

4th Grade:  TAKING A LOOK AT POLYHEDRA:
This week we looked further at polyhedra attributes.  The students had to identify how many faces, vertices and edges to each shape.  Then, we looked at their results and came up with some rules in determining these answers.  This took us a little time to examine our results and the different relationships they had to the other answers.
We will continue exploring 3-D shapes next week.

Enjoy the Extra Hour of Sleep,
Ms. Losinski
