LANGUAGE ARTS

1ST GRADE:  CONNECTIONS:  This week we finished defining connection as a class.  We revisited our matching game from last week.  Then we took our matches and found ways to group our them into categories.  This led us into defining 3 generalizations for connections

  • Connections show Relationships among objects, places, ideas and people.
  • Connections can be intellectual, physical, emotional or social.
  • Connections can change or stay the same overtime.
To further understand our rules for connections, we turned things around and made a list of items that were not connected.  We ended the day by looking at a set of black and white photographs.  The goal was to identify what the picture represented.  This will lead us into our Coat of Connections projects that we will assemble next week.  A big THANK YOU for all your help with the Coat of Connections project that was sent home last week.

Due to early dismissal, we did not meet on Tuesday.

2ND GRADE:  CONNECTIONS:  We began class by finishing our discussion of the different categories they separated their pairs into from last week.  We then looked at the categories and defined the relationships they paired together.  This led us into the generalizations of connections that we will focus on this year...

  • Connections show Relationships among objects, places, ideas and people.
  • Connections can be intellectual, physical, emotional or social.
  • Connections can change or stay the same overtime.
Tuesday we wrapped up our understanding of connections.  To better understand our generalizations from yesterday, we worked with some non-connected items like shoe and milk.  Looking at several examples of items not connected helped them better understand the reasons why are rules are true when making a connection.  This let us wrap-up our lesson by connecting milk to a cup or gallon.  They have a much better idea to the generalizations of connections, but I assured them that we will be working with this definition all year.  By the end of our unit they will be masters of CONNECTions!

3RD GRADE:  INTERACTIONS:  On Monday we looked at all of the different interactions we listed last week.  To define our word, we looked for ways to group our interactions into categories.  They quickly discovered that interactions would fit into more then 1 category, as our first category had almost all the interactions in it.  To start our definition we decided an interaction must be between 2 or more people (groups).  We furthered are discussion on how an interaction must affect both parties by first looking at cause and effect - which only affects 1 side.  This helped them to understand the idea of both parties must be affected to be an interaction.  This was a challenge for them today, but we will continue to work on this throughout the year.  To end the day, we looked at some more generalizations to an interaction...

  • Interactions can be accidental or purposeful.
  • Interactions can be negative or positive.
  • Interactions can have a fleeting influence or can leave a deep and lasing impression.

On Tuesday, the students came in and worked with pairs to complete the chart that introduced our guidelines to interactions.  They were to list examples of interactions under each generalization.  While adding them to a category they further defined whether it was accidental or purposeful, negative or positive, or fleeting or lasting impression.  To end the day we looked at the word parts to interaction.  This was to help us further break down the meaning of the word  for the the students.

Inter = between, among, in the midst of
Action = the process of doing
Interaction = reciprocal action or influence (each thing affects the other)

MATH

1ST GRADE:  INTRODUCTION UNIT:  We did not meet on Wednesday because of a special presentation to our One School, One Book at the time.

On Thursday, we started with a quick review of the speaker and listener roles.  We then participated in a game to practice being a good speaker and listener.  The first round of the game, they had to listen to each of my instructions as they tried to replicate the same picture I was creating.

At the end, we held up our images and hoped to have a match.  I was pleased to have a match with our first attempt at this activity!  The second time we practiced our speaking role with each student taking a turn to add in a direction for our picture.  This time we had a few more matches!

To end the day, we were introduced to math attributes to define a shape.  While we looked at a rectangle, they were introduced to the terms side and vertex.  We took our new terms and began to complete What's The Same About These Shapes?  This activity is a set of worksheets that has the students identify a definition for shape.  We will continue to complete this activity next week.

2ND GRADE:  INTRODUCTION UNIT:  We began by reviewing our speaker and listener roles that Dru and Teller introduced us to last week.  We finished reading our scrapbook together.  As we read the book, we were asked to identify any shapes we saw in the photographs.  To wrap up speaker and listener roles we practiced an activity to utilize both of these skills.  I took the role of the speaker and gave different directions to making a picture.

They should have used their listening skills to copy down my instructions.  By the end of the activity, we should hold up our photographs and they should match.  For the students to practice the speaker roles we tried a second attempt where we each took turns adding onto our directions.  This was more of a challenge as they had to be precise with their instructions for the pictures to match.  They did a great job with this activity.  Our first time we had one perfect picture and the second time - we almost had the whole class with matching pictures!

On Thursday, the students were introduced to our first Think Deeply question.  The Think Deeply is a wrap-up to each lesson.  We will be asked to answer and explain our thinking pertaining to the lesson we completed.  This will help identify if the students mastered the concept of the lesson or need a little extra review. For the first Think Deeply, we went through it step by step together. This way I will know they will understand the expectations when we complete them throughout the year.  I have to say I was SUPER impressed with the geometry terms they used in our first week!  When thinking like mathematicians, I heard students change the definition from a closed shape to a polygon.  We also held a discussion on vertices.  I cannot wait for them to take this knowledge further!

3RD GRADE:  PATTERNS IN SEQUENCES - THE NAME GAME:  On Wednesday, we began the investigation phase to repeated patterns.  To understand our concept further, the students completed the Name Game in their workbooks.  They started out by answering questions to the same SARAH being repeated 5 times.  After they answered those questions, we looked for some quick strategies to answer the questions.  We came up with two strategies to solve for the answer multiplication or repeated addition.  They worked on the next two question on their own.

On Thursday, we went over the last two questions of the Name Game.  We walked through the last questions because some students still had questions with utilizing a strategy.  When reviewing it as a class, they started to understand the concept better.  This time we also introduced the idea of dividing to solve for the answer.

We ended the week by being introduced to our first Think Deeply question.  This is a question the students will complete at the end of a chapter to check their understanding of the concept.  They will not just solve a problem, but will think like a mathematician and explain their thought process to solve it. We will work through the first Think Deeply together.  This will allow me to know the students have a understanding of what the expectations our when completing them in the future.

We will continue working through our introduction of the Think Deeply Question next week.

4TH GRADE:  MAKING SENSE OF FRACTIONS - MEASURE TREASURES:  This week continued with making our fraction strips. We finished our eighths and sixteenths.  Then we looked for any patterns we saw within our fraction strips.  The students discovered quite easily, that the smaller the denominator the larger the fraction.  They were able to reverse it around and state the larger the denominator the smaller the fraction.  We Continued making our fraction strips with thirds, sixths and twelfths.

This time we introduced a new strategy of using the ruler to measure for our parts.  Our fraction strips were 12 inches long, so the students discovered they could divide as a strategy to create our fraction strips.  This quickly became our favorite method for creating fraction strips because we were getting an exact measurement for them.  At the end of the week, the students were able to figure out the pattern:  with each fold they were doubling the previous fraction.

Next week we will wrap-up our fraction strips.

Enjoy the Warm Weather,
Ms. Losinski

BLINK...IT'S FRIDAY

Welcome!  Last week many students shared personal goals for this school year.  Many of my students expressed their desire to grow in math, language arts or even both.  I am super excited to help my students work on their personal goal throughout the year.  This week we started our first lesson in each class.  I was proud of all the hard work and ideas shared in class.  All of my classes rocked it, it is going to be an AMAZING year!

Around the School

September 11th:  PTO Meeting at 6:30 - in the library
September 12th:  Early Dismissal - 1:45pm
September 13th: Picture Day
September 18th-19th:  Camp Goodfellow - Dunkle & Claus 4th Grade
September 22nd:  Yost Fest - 5:30 to 7:00pm
September 25th-29th:  Go College Week

LANGUAGE ARTS

1ST GRADE:  CONNECTIONS:  This week we started our lesson by reading The Graphic Alphabet by David Pelletier.  While we explored the pages of the book, the children quickly caught on that each letter form was representing the word on the page.  The children were making connections with the illustrations to figure out the mystery word.  To further their development with the term connection, we played a matching game with cards.  Our goal was to find the best relationship between the words.

We will continue to work with the meaning of connections next week.

HOMEWORK:  A packet should have came home with your student on Wednesday.  In this packet, we ask that the students complete the blank patches (drawings in black) and Coat of Connections (the writing portion)  the blank patches (drawings in black).  Please send this back in with your student on Monday, September 11th.  We will assemble the rest of the project in class together.  Please remember this should be student led parent guided 😉

2ND GRADE:  CONNECTIONS:  This week we worked as a class to define the word connection.  Students worked in small groups taking a pile of items that were connected and found ways to place them into general categories.  Each group shared their connections with the class.

This led us into a discussion of how some words could fit into more than 1 category based on our personal connections.  This activity helped us to develop a deeper understanding of how items are related to each other.  We will continue to develop a definition for connections next week.

3RD GRADE:  INTERACTIONS:  This week we started out with a group activity of playing charades!  We compiled a list of the different actions that were acted out during the game.  Next, the students needed to think how all of these words on our list were related.

Together, we came to the conclusion that these were examples of interactions.  As a class,we started to brainstorm more interactions we could add to our list.

We will continue to define interactions as a class next week.

MATH

ALL MATH GROUPS:  PRE-ASSESSMENT:  On Wednesday the students came in and took a math pre-assessment.  This is a tool we use at this point in time to see how much the students know about the concepts they will be learning throughout the year.  We will also use this same assessment at the end of the year to show their growth.

Although some students may have struggles with the assessment today, it is something that they will shine with at the end of the year when they see how much they learned.
Continue reading below about each grade levels introductory unit on Thursday.

1ST GRADE:  GEOMETRY:  UNIT INTRODUCTION:  On Thursday we received a package in the mail from Imi and Zani.  As we opened the package, we read a letter that explained they were two birds from the South America.  They were asking for our help to test out some math games throughout the year.  We decided we were up for the challenge!  However, before we can help our friends we must review some procedures they sent us to become mathematicians.  We started with the speaker and listener roles.  Then we ended the day looking at a scrapbook they sent us and identifying the different roles they used in the book.

Next week we will test a game they have sent for us to test for them.

2ND GRADE:  GEOMETRY:  UNIT INTRODUCTION:  On Thursday we received a package in the mail from Dru and Teller.  We opened up the package and quickly learned about these two new friends.  They are two meerkats from Africa known as the Detective Duo.  They travel the world learning from different classrooms and have asked us to help them this year.  We decided we were up to this challenge!  We continued looking through the package and found a scrapbook they sent for us to read.  We began to read it, but paused halfway through to look at a list of speaker and listener roles they sent to us.  We reviewed those processes to help us become a better team of mathematicians.

We will continue to explore the rest of the information they sent us next week.

3RD GRADE:  ALGEBRA:  PATTERNS IN SEQUENCE - THE NAME GAME:  On Thursday, the students were introduced to the term Repeating Patterns.  To define this term we had to figure out the next 5 letters in the pattern SARAHSARAHSA.  Next, they had to find the 18th letter in the pattern.  We were sharing our ideas to solve these problems and heard 4 ways to solve for the answer.

For added practice, we took a name from the class and tried to find the 20th letter. This time I was happy to see everyone find the right letter!

Next week the students and I will be looking for an easier way to solve repeating patterns, when looking for a much higher number in the pattern.

4TH GRADE:  FRACTIONS:  MAKING SENSE OF FRACTIONS:  On Thursday we dove right into our first lesson.  As a class, we started by defining a fraction and the parts to them.  Then we were introduced to Tori and Jordan - two students who we will follow throughout this unit.  They were asked to make Fraction Strips.
We began this process together starting with a whole fraction.  As we began completing the fractions strips, some students already began correlating how many folds to create the next strip.  This is part of the end goal we are working towards as we complete this task.

We will continue creating fraction strips next week.

Have a great weekend!

FIRST FRIDAY

HOORAY!  We completed our first official week of High Ability.  It was a great week seeing some familiar faces and meeting some new ones.  The kids were just as excited as I was to start HA.

Just a reminder, this is our weekly blog where you will see all of the AMAZING things the students work on throughout the week.  In a normal blog I will break into two sections - Language Arts and Math.  Each grade will have their own area within each section.  I will give a brief explanation of what the students are working on in class.  I will also share some photographs of each grade level. In the blog I will include a calendar of important dates from around the school. The blog is a great tool I utilize to allow you to have a window into our classroom.

Around the School
September 4th: Labor Day - No School
September 12th: Early Dismissal - 1:45 for Elementary
September 13th: Picture Day
September 25th -29th: College Week

This week all classes participated in the same activities, so I am just going to have one section.  On Monday and Thursday, the students viewed a slideshow teaching them about our classroom.  We went over procedures and expectations the students our expected to follow when in my classroom. I ended the day sharing some information about myself.

I also reminded the students they will be receiving a DOJO point when visiting my room as a part of our school-wide behavior plan. I explained to the students that they will receive one warning when in the room and after that it would be a loss of a DOJO point for the day.  They are only in my room for 30 minutes so I stressed the importance of utilizing all of our class time for instruction and not corrections. I don't see this being a problem going forward, but wanted them to understand what would be a loss of point.

The second day of class we turned it around and it was all about the students.  It was a perfect chance for us to get-to-know each other. Some activities they participated in were guess the mystery student, get-to-know you bingo, or a get-to-know you quilt. Some of my classes completed a following directions worksheet. This activity had a twist at the end. If they followed the directions they were to turn it in without completing any of the silly questions - I was able to trick a few students with this activity! It was a fun day with each class as they completed different activities.

After meeting with my groups this week, I am even more excited for this school year. It is going to be a great year with lots of fun activities planned for each grade. Next week, we will be diving right into our materials.

Looking forward to a great year,
Ms. Losinski

HIGH ABILITY 2017-2018

WELCOME BACK!

Hello!  I hope you all had a wonderful summer and are now ready to start fresh.  It's going to be another great school year!  Many families are returning, so you're familiar with how we do things in High Ability.  I'm excited to welcome our new families to our program and to fill you in on how everything works.  The first blog is always lengthy because there's so much to share.  Most will stay the same, but there are a few subtle changes.  Read for yourself!

GENERAL HIGH ABILITY INFORMATION
Welcome to our High Ability (HA) blog! This is our weekly blog that will allow you to peek inside our classroom to see what exciting things the children are learning throughout the year.  A weekly email will be sent when the blog is ready to view for the week.  My goal will be to have it ready for you every Friday. You will be able to access the blog from a link at the bottom of the email or from Yost’s homepage under classrooms.

Our weekly schedule will be Mondays and Tuesdays Language Arts (LA) and Wednesdays and Thursdays Math.  If your child qualified for both, I will see them all four days!  On Fridays, I'll meet with the other HA Instructors to share lesson plans for the upcoming week which means no classes on that day.

High ability will meet twice a week during flex time for a half an hour each day.  Flex time is a time set aside at Yost per grade level for students to receive more intensified instruction.  Your child's teacher and I will keep an open line of communication to make sure their needs are being met in both locations.

Occasionally there will be homework assigned.  It honestly tends to be more with the language arts/reading groups than with the math groups.  There will be reading homework in second and fourth grade for sure!  Our third grade unit will possibly be new, so I'm waiting to see what it has in store.  It is critical to their success in the classroom to stay up on the reading assignments!
New for this year I plan on making a reading tracking sheet for HA that the parents can see what is assigned each week instead of waiting to read it in the blog.  I am hoping this allows for students to work on assigned reading throughout the week and have little to none for the weekend!

HIGH ABILITY LA/READING CURRICULUM
We are using the High Ability Language Arts Curriculum Project which was developed by the Indiana Department of Education.  Each grade centers around an umbrella concept that fits every lesson.  They are filled with many fantastic lessons that build upon each other as the year goes.  Teaching under the umbrella allows students to make connections which calls on higher order thinking.  We will use several of the trade and picture books suggested by the state as part of our curriculum.  The gifted lessons use the same models from year to year like Paul's Reasoning Model and the Hamburger Model for persuasive writing.  The added bonus is that students who continue through the grades in High Ability, will become quite efficient and familiar with the similar high ability structures while analyzing literature.

HIGH ABILITY MATH CURRICULUM

For math, we have purchased additional high ability math units to use with each grade.  I'm sure many are looking forward to the giant Yeti or the egg crash test that they've heard about from previous students, but the units are different this year.  We are using the same series, just teaching a different unit.  For the younger grades, we'll be using Mentoring Young Mathematicians (M2).  The upper grades will use Mentoring Mathematical Minds (M3).

It is great teaching math this way!  It's not math in isolation; it's real life applicable situations.  The students are asked to problem solve problems using math as a means to get there.

It was a bit of a change for the students last year, in that they were required to write and explain their thoughts, ideas, and decisions about math.  By the end of the year they had grown tremendously!   I was proud of them.  Being gifted in math is so much more than just being good with numbers!  When writing and explaining their answers, it will further cement their understanding of the concept.  I will support their writing efforts while in class, but writing and explaining their mathematical answers are something to work on with your child at home.

HIGH ABILITY START DATE

Great news!  Since I am returning from last year,  we will be able to start earlier than usual with students!!!!  There's a little bit of prep before we get started and on the same page with my HA team, but not nearly the work needed to train new instructors.  We usually don't start until after Labor Day.  Whoooohoooo!!!

Yost's start date will be Monday, August 28th for Reading/Language Arts and Wednesday, August 30th for math.  I'll send home permission slips on Friday, August 18th.  Please return your child’s permission slip by Friday, August 25th.  You must have your permission slip in before your child may begin class.  I will use this first week of class to go over classroom procedures and expectations.  We will also do an icebreaker activity to get to know everyone.

MEET MS. LOSINSKI

I am so excited to be returning to Duneland for my second year.  I was previously an instructional assistant with Michigan City Area Schools since 2011.  I worked with students in grades K-6th teaching small reading groups.  It is hard to believe that I am beginning my 7th year in education.

I am a mom to two wonderful children.  I have a daughter in 8th grade and a son in 3rd grade.  A new change for my family for this year is my son will be joining us at Yost and my daughter is at Chesterton Middle School.  They still keep me running in many different directions.  My daughter is a runner and loves to be on the stage - singing and acting.  My son enjoys swimming, Star Wars and sea creatures.  I am also a mother to our little puppy, Pixie.  She joined our family last year over spring break and has grown to all of 10 pounds.

Some things never change, as I am still a DISNEY Fanatic.  We took our yearly family trip there this summer. Leaving me well-rested and ready for another great school year.  We are already making plans for our next trip.  I have taken my love of Disney one step further this past year, as I now am now an official Disney and Universal Vacation Planner.

This past summer we enjoyed many beach days, movie nights, game nights, campfires and of course my favorite - trips for ice cream!  We packed in as much fun as we could the weeks approaching the school year.  I hope you have all enjoyed your summer and are ready to get back into school mode.  I am looking forward to a great year.  I cannot wait to see all of my students from last year and to meet my new friends.  It is going to be a great year in High Ability.

Please feel free to email me at amy.losinski@duneland.k12.in.us with any questions or concerns.

Looking forward to a great year!
Ms. Losinski
